The Copperband Butterflyfish, Chelmon rostratus, is also known as the Beaked Butterflyfish, Beaked Coralfish, and Banded Long-snout Butterflyfish. These fish come from the Western Pacific. They have a silvery-white body with yellowish-orange vertical bands edged in black. They have a long narrow snout that is used to search crevices for food and a black false eyespot on the rear dorsal fin.

Copperband Butterflyfish are omnivores and require a diet rich in both meaty foods and plant-based foods. They will eat flake food, algae, frozen plankton, mysis and brine shrimp, and live shrimp and worms. They should be fed several times a day. When first introduced to a tank, it may be difficult to get them to eat and can be encouraged with live food such as feeder shrimp and bloodworms.

This butterflyfish can reach lengths of up to 8″ and will do best in an aquarium of at least 100 gallons with plenty of live rock to graze on and hide in. They will thrive in large, fish-only aquariums with lots of open swimming space and live rock hiding places.

The fish are considered reef safe “with caution” because they are known to nip at some corals and inverts.
